Picayune became a Main Street community in May 1996. Picayune Main Street is a non-profit organization governed by a board of directors which is responsible for establishing policy, reviewing and monitoring committee work plans in progress. The board participates in fund-raising, membership campaigns and serves on one of the 4 point committees. Picayune Main Street's primary purpose is the preservation of the historic character and integrity of the downtown commercial and residential districts. Picayune Main Street is committed to sponsoring programs which fulfill charitable goals: Historic preservation, community education and lessening the burden of local government. Picayune Main Street, Inc. is an organization comprised of a hard working group of volunteers. Our organization is dedicated to the revitalization and beautification of our unique downtown area. The Picayune Main Street, Inc. Mission: The mission of Main Street is to preserve the historic character and integrity of the downtown commercial and residential district and to enhance the culture and quality of life through active community involvement. Vision: The vision of Main Street is to have a progressive Southern city which offers an excellent quality of life to its residents yet maintains its unique charm. That downtown Picayune will have a unified appearance, streetscape improvement program and additional street lighting that will encourage walking during the day and evening hours. The completion of Highway 11 improvements to allow traffic to move more freely and encourage pedestrian travel, cultural, educational and other programs with a civic center to house such and be used by different organizations. Together with the involvement of the community, have a city which places a high premium on the quality of life of its residents. Board meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 5:30 in Train Depot. General membership meetings are held quarterly and will be announced at a later date.
