Grow, Sell & Eat Local!

There has been a Farmers Market in Downtown Binghamton since as long as anyone can remember. It has changed locations a few times and the days have changed once or twice. But, generally speaking, it has been on Tuesdays and Fridays near the Court House for many years. In 2005, the Downtown Binghamton Business Association, which has operated the market for many years, formed a Farmers Market Committee chaired by then City Clerk Eric Denk. Denk has moved on to become Clerk of the Broome County Legislature and continues to chair the Farmers Market Committee today. Over the past six years, Denk and Patty Albaugh worked to re-vamp the Market rules to state that 50% of the products sold at the Market must be grown or produced by the vendor who is selling them. In practice, most vendors bring 100% locally grown or locally produced products. Denk first introduced student interns to assist with market operations in 2008 with one student intern. In 2009 a relationship was formed with the School of Management at Binghamton University which produced three interns in 2009. In 2009, the Market introduced a General Store to offer additional products and make the market more diverse. The Market will continue to provide a fun place to hang out, listen to great music, and to take a break from our hectic schedules to sample Nature’s best, brought to downtown by our very own local growers.
