The robots are coming... Build a working robot from a box of parts? That’s the task for 65 teams of high school students from 12 states and Brazil in the 10th annual Palmetto Regional FIRST Robotics Competition, March 1-2, at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. Nine Horry County high schools are participating. Working with teachers and professional mentors from the community, they had six weeks to build and test a robot to accomplish specific tasks. The teams warm up Thursday, February 28, with robot inspections and practice rounds, followed by the tournament itself Friday and Saturday, March 1 and 2. Everyone’s invited to watch the students put their skills to work in this fast-paced event. Orange Box Senior Job and Volunteer Fair... Employers and non-profit organizations can sign up now for the 10th annual Grand Strand Senior Job and Volunteer Assistance Fair, to be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Monday, March 18, at the Convention Center. Participation is free! The fair is sponsored by the Myrtle Beach Senior Citizens Advisory Committee. Orange Box Military Appreciation Days... The month of May is set aside for Military Appreciation Days in Myrtle Beach! We are celebrating military men and women of all services, whether active duty, National Guard, reserve or veterans. Events set for Saturday, May 25, include a 5K run, the big parade, a family picnic, military exhibits and more. Rocky Bleier, US Army Veteran and former Pittsburgh Steelers running back, is the parade Grand Marshal and will meet fans at the picnic. Orange Box Parking meters... Parking meters and pay stations are in effect from March 1 through September 30 in the commercial areas east of Kings Parking meterHighway. See our Parking Meter page for more information. If you have a valid handicapped hang tag or license plate, or a Purple Heart or Disabled American Veterans (DAV) license plate, you may park free at any public meter in South Carolina. (This exemption does not apply to privately operated meters or pay stations.) Also, you can use in Parkmobile to pay for parking via your cell phone. Orange Box New golf cart rules... The state has approved new regulations governing the use of golf carts on public roads. The General Assembly expanded a golf cart's range from two miles to four miles from the owner's residence or business, but only on roads with a speed limit of 35 miles per hour or less. As before, only licensed drivers, age 16 and older, can drive golf carts on public streets and only during daylight hours. A permit from the S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles is still required, but now operators must show proof of liability insurance and proof of ownership. Also, permits must be renewed every five years.
